BRIEF BIO / PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS
As Chief Academic Officer at WIHD, Dr. Patrick provides leadership and support to all education and training activities that facilitate program evaluation and promote research at WIHD. She is also primarily responsible for developing and maintaining the research agenda and research department, promoting and leading research and evaluation projects, overseeing related student engagement and activities, managing affiliation agreements with universities and colleges, and providing guidance to all academic offerings. Dr. Patrick is responsible for supervising research faculty and staff, securing external funding, and disseminating project results. As Co-UCEDD Director, she implements UCEDD goals and objectives in line with local and state needs and national AIDD guidelines; secures and maintains federal grant funding; works with the Data Manager to assure collection and reporting of data required for federal reporting; represents the UCEDD at appropriate local, state, and national meetings; meets with the UCEDD’s Community Advisory Council (CAC) as needed and serve as UCEDD lead in absence of CEO; and, supervises programs and staff related to UCEDD activities, as assigned.
Dr. Patrick also has over 15 years of experience with public health program development, management and evaluation. More specifically, from 2004-2018 she served as Data Manager for the Safe Babies New York program (formerly the New York Shaken Baby Prevention Program), which sought to educate new parents on the dangers of shaking an infant as well as safe infant sleep practices. She has also served as Project Director on such NYS Department of Health projects as “State Systemic Improvement Plan: Family-Centered Practices Learning Collaboratives” (to improve early intervention services throughout NYS to promote family-centeredness, which has been shown to lead to improved family outcomes; 2017-2020) and “Regional Support Centers for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN) Program” (to create and maintain regional support centers for families of children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) by engaging families and individuals and providing technical assistance to local health departments; 2019-2024).
DESCRIPTION OF RESEARCH INTERESTS/ACTIVITIES
Dr. Patrick’s research interests and activities are in the following areas:
Chronic Disease: Chronic diseases are the leading causes of death and disability in the U.S. When compared to those without a disability, individuals with disabilities have higher rates of many chronic health conditions, including arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Dr. Patrick is particularly interested in chronic disease prevention, management and outcomes among individuals with disabilities.
Program Evaluation: Dr. Patrick also collaborates with clinicians within WIHD’s Health and Dental Services to conduct program evaluations and quality improvement projects to enhance and expand services.
Technology: Assistive and enabling technology enables inclusion and participation of individuals with disabilities in a variety of areas of life. Dr. Patrick is involved in a number of projects that explore the use of such technology to promote independent living, self-care and management, and healthcare communication.
