THE WESTCHESTER INSTITUTE FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT PRESENTS
CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE: DEVELOPMENT, HEALTH, AND WELL-BEING
What
A day long conference to share successful models and to work on challenges to optimal development, health and well-being of children in foster care with a special focus on children with social, emotional, and developmental needs.
Who
The Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD) -- which serves the region as a leading resource for individuals with disabilities in the areas of clinical and support services, and for health care professionals as a major university-affiliated resource for research, education and training -- currently offers the highly successful WIHD Assistive Technology Loan Program for Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers. However, this program does not apply to school age children. Therefore, a child who has been utilizing an assistive technology device in preschool, must return the device before starting kindergarten. The partnership has received support of two grants of $10,000 each from the Westchester Community Foundation (WCF) and the Thomas and Agnes Carvel Foundation. WIHD and the Mid-Westchester Special Education Consortium created a plan to improve and expand AT services to children in schools. A model for an AT loan program and AT evaluation/implementation teams has been developed.
