What
A presentation in partnership with the Mid-Westchester Special Education Consortium -- the Pleasantville, Briarcliff, Mount Pleasant, Valhalla, Pocantico Hills, Irvington, Tarrytown, and Elmsford school districts – will be presented at the Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD). Info on this innovative partnership will be unveiled highlighting a model program for school districts to ensure improved learning for the districts’ students with special needs. Through this partnership, students with AT needs will have access to technology and support needed.
Who
The Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD) -- which serves the region as a leading resource for individuals with disabilities in the areas of clinical and support services, and for health care professionals as a major university-affiliated resource for research, education and training -- currently offers the highly successful WIHD Assistive Technology Loan Program for Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers. However, this program does not apply to school age children. Therefore, a child who has been utilizing an assistive technology device in preschool, must return the device before starting kindergarten. The partnership has received support of two grants of $10,000 each from the Westchester Community Foundation (WCF) and the Thomas and Agnes Carvel Foundation. WIHD and the Mid-Westchester Special Education Consortium created a plan to improve and expand AT services to children in schools. A model for an AT loan program and AT evaluation/implementation teams has been developed.
