About WIHD

Vision

WIHD envisions a future where all people, including children and adults living with disabilities, fully participate in society, live healthy and productive lives, and have access to culturally appropriate services and supports, emerging technologies, competent professionals, caring families, caregivers, and communities.

Mission

WIHD advances policies and practices that foster the healthy development and ensure the safety of all children, strengthen families and communities, and promote health and well-being among people of all ages with disabilities and special health care needs. WIHD accomplishes its mission through:

  • Educating professionals for the future
  • Developing, demonstrating and delivering innovative services and supports
  • Building the capacity of communities through training and technical assistance
  • Conducting research to increase understanding and improve services
  • Creating and disseminating accessible information
Our work is based on a vision of a society that includes individuals with disabilities as full participants, valued citizens and friends.

Values

WIHD partners with people living with disabilities, families, caregivers, advocates and community members from diverse backgrounds in all its activities with a focus on reaching unserved and vulnerable populations. Through our efforts, we seek to advance the principles of self-determination, family and consumer-directed supports, community inclusion, and cultural competence throughout the life span.
