School of Public Health
The School of Public Health provides graduate programs in a number of public health and health science disciplines. The M.P.H. degree in Disability and Human Development provides students with a foundation in public health issues, focusing on system design, research, policy analysis, and program evaluation related to disability supports and services.
Graduates of the School work in a variety of settings including government agencies, private practices, hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies, public health agencies, corporations, environmental and pharmaceutical laboratories and community service organizations.
The majority of School of Public Health students attend part time. To accommodate their schedules, classes are offered in the late afternoons and evenings and on Saturday mornings. Many students are healthcare administrators, physicians, nurses, corporate benefits administrators, nutritionists, technologists, engineers and researchers. Others are seeking to return to the work force or are employed in non-health related fields and want to make a career change. All are committed to maximizing their potential for growth and to enhancing their professional abilities.
Program in Disability and Human Development
Students in the program generally hold management or leadership
positions in schools and community agencies serving infants, children,
or adults with disabilities. The M.P.H. degree in Disability and Human
Development provides students with a foundation in public health issues,
focusing on system design, research, policy analysis, and program
evaluation related to disability supports and services.
Students gain competencies through coursework, field experiences, and
the thesis. Field experiences are coordinated through the student's
workplace, at the Westchester Institute for Human Development and in
affiliated community programs.
Faculty include leading experts in the field, most of whom are staff
members of the University Center for Excellence in Developmental
Disabilities at WIHD, one of 67 programs that make up the national
network of University Centers for Excellence in Developmental
Disabilities.
Graduate Certificate in Children with Special Health
Needs
The Graduate Certificate Program prepares future public health
professionals to address the needs of children with neurodevelopmental
disabilities and their families with emphasis on the disparities in
access and outcomes experienced by families from diverse backgrounds.
This interdisciplinary certificate program is open to clinical and
public health professionals and students from a wide range of
disciplines. While the certificate may be undertaken as a focused
learning experience, the course of study also serves as an entry to
master's degree studies for those who desire it.
