You are in: Handbook for Families Adopting a Child with Developmental Disabilities

So, you want to adopt?

You've been thinking for a while that you have room in your home and in your heart for more children.

You're looking at the children in New York State who wait for families and see that many of them have special needs. They may have developmental, physical, or emotional disabilities, be African-American or Hispanic, be seven years old or older, or belong to sibling groups who need to be adopted together.

You've decided that a child or children with developmental disabilities would be welcome members of your family, but you'd like more information to help you decide.

If you think that adopting a child or children with developmental disabilities may be the right decision for you, this handbook will give you some information you need to make your decision.
