Theater Workshop Classes to Adults with Disabilities
Working with Jordan Jankus of the Self-Advocacy Association
of NYS, WIHD was able to offer some wonderful theater workshop
classes to adults with disabilities from the local area. Members
of Another Step, Inc., Abbott House and ARC of Rockland, joined
Tim Godwin and Grant Olding from Thrift Theatre, both professionals
from the West End theater world of London, on September 25th
& 26th in the WIHD auditorium. About forty adults participated
in these workshops, getting a chance to get on stage, use a
microphone, sing and dance and generally have a great time.

Anniversary Benefit - September 29, 2006
On Friday, September 29th, after being in existence for over
50 years, Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD)
celebrated its first year anniversary as an independent non-profit
organization. Close to two hundred people joined in the benefit
festivities and helped to make it a memorable event.
The celebration began with a champagne reception, followed
by a short program that recognized the support from government
officials, board members, staff and donors that resulted in
the successful separation of WIHD from the Westchester Medical
Center in 2005.
The evening continued to its highlight, a cabaret spectacular
by leading performers from London’s West End Theatre District.
Dessert, coffee and tea, compliments of Susan Lawrence of Chappaqua
rounded out the evening.

New Family/Student Transition
Specialist at WIHD
The Hudson Valley Transition Coordination Site of Southern Westchester
BOCES has recently created a new part-time position located at
WIHD. Diane Greble has been named as the Family/Student Transition
Specialist. She is available to assist families of adolescent
and older children with disabilities in Westchester, Rockland,
Putnam, Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, and Sullivan counties to learn
more about transition planning as students prepare to finish school
and become participating adults in community life. Another focus
of this effort is to reach out to families through parent support
groups, community organizations, transition consortiums, youth
bureaus, Independent Living Centers, agencies and other groups
to help families understand their child’s options for the
future.
Working with The Family Connection’s Parent-to-Parent
program and other parent groups in our region, the Family/Student
Transition Specialist will help link families together to help
each other with educational and life issues, and share their
understanding of available resources and successful strategies
to assist their family member.
To discuss transition issues, to sign up for the Parent-to-Parent
Transition and Post-School Network, or to request a presentation
for a parent group or an organization please contact Diane Greble
at 914.493.1027 or DGreble@wihd.org.

Parent-to-Parent Satellite Office
at the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital
The Family Connection at WIHD is
pleased to announce the opening of a satellite office of its
Parent-to-Parent program at the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital
(MFCH) at the Westchester Medical Center (WMC). This Parent-to-Parent
Hospital Visiting Program is a unique model of family support
with family members helping other families. Parents are offered
emotional support, advocacy, practical tips, disability and
health information, resources and materials in English or Spanish.
Parents are supported in making a smooth transition from The
Children’s Hospital to a community hospital or to home.
The Parent-to-Parent Hospital Coordinator, Ireina Hawthorne,
is a bilingual parent who is available part-time and on-call
to visit with families whose children are hospitalized. She
can be reached through the Family Connection office at the MFCH
at 914.493.6156 or through the Child Life Program. The Family
Connection staff are available to provide follow-up contacts
including links to other parents of children with similar experiences
and parent support groups in their local communities. Staff
also provide information and assistance in accessing early intervention,
family support, and other services, programs and entitlements.
