Health Promotion
My Health, My Choice, My Responsibility
This is a training program developed at WIHD in collaboration with the Self-Advocacy Association of New York State (SANYS). Its purpose is to help individuals with developmental disabilities make healthy choices in daily life and speak up for good health. The seminar consists of eight sessions. Topics included are developing a health plan, self-advocating at the doctor’s office, physical activity, nutrition, safety and cleanliness in the home, hygiene, and emotional health. During each session participants receive information, learn the material through discussion, activities, and visual aids, and develop goals. Collaboration with community resources, professionals, and agencies provide additional content and expertise to the seminar. The program includes three health tools: My Medical Appointment, a form to help prepare for medical appointments; Health Information Form, a record of a person’s health needs and medical history; and My Health Plan, a listing of goals developed during the seminar.
A unique aspect of My Health, My Choice, My Responsibility. is that it is run by two trainers: an agency staff person and a self-advocate. Participants are individuals with developmental disabilities who have an interest in their own health and wellness and have the desire to speak up for themselves.
The program was initially developed and implemented at WIHD. It has since been replicated with groups at three different agencies. During the current year of the grant, WIHD will conduct train-the-trainer sessions throughout the state for agencies and self-advocates that would like to conduct the training seminar. The program includes a curriculum with the health tools and a trainer’s manual.
Funding: This project is funded by a grant to SANYS from the New York State Developmental Disabilities Council; WIHD has carried out its activities under a sub-contract with SANYS.

Children's Advocacy Center
The Children's Advocacy Center at WIHD is a child-friendly environment where professionals can complete a sensitive, competent, efficient, interdisciplinary assessment of abused children, while providing the children and their families with the support and services that they need. The CAC at WIHD collaborates with the Westchester County Department of Social Services (DSS), the District Attorney’s Office, law enforcement, victim’s assistance and mental health providers to conduct sensitive, competent, interdisciplinary assessments of children who are reported to have experienced sexual abuse or severe physical abuse. This model reduces the trauma for children and provides children and their families the support and services that they need. This year, over 400 children received evaluations at the CAC.
The CAC is working closely with the Project Tree House committee, including the volunteer design team, to redesign and furnish the Center to make it a more “child friendly” facility. This coalition has created an innovative design and is committed to overseeing the renovations and furnishing of the space so that all children in Westchester County suspected of abuse can be interviewed and examined in an appropriate setting. We are now raising funds and gathering donated products to supplement State funds for the project. We hope that our Children’s Advocacy Center will be a model for other centers around the country.
