Armonk Center for Dance raises over $4,000 for Local Charity

Valhalla, NY – A dance concert to benefit Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD), was held by the Armonk Center for Dance.  A check for $4,187.80 was presented to the Institute on June 13.  The money raised will be used to support the assistive technology program at WIHD. 

Bryan Conway, son of Alan and Heather Conway, owners of the dance studio, has been using WIHD’s assistive technology program for seven years.  Assistive technology refers to devices that enable an individual to perform everyday activities such as movement, communication, and learning, among others.  For Bryan, who has cerebral palsy and limited verbal ability, “the big breakthrough was a customized Apple laptop, which enabled Bryan to communicate with those around him and greatly expand his capabilities,” said Heather.  “I don’t think we would be where we are today, if it was not for WIHD.” 

The Assistive Technology Team at WIHD has been conducting evaluations and training in the area of assistive technology for over 15 years.  It provides services for children with a range of disabilities and consults with school districts on the best ways to use technology to meet their educational needs. 

Westchester Institute for Human Development is one of only 67 University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (UCEDD) in the nation.  WIHD programs focus on the development of children, the safety of vulnerable children, and the support of families and communities to promote the health and well-being of people of all ages.  WIHD accomplishes its mission through education, development of innovative services, research and the dissemination of accessible information.
