Autism Program at WIHD

Strengthening the Community through training, support, and services for children, families, and professionals

Consulting and Training for School Districts

Regional Center on Autism

The Hudson Valley Regional Center for Autism (RCA), is one of seven newly established Regional Autism Centers in New York State, coordinated by the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) at SUNY at Albany.  The goals of the RCA are to serve as a resource in bringing research and practice together in community settings, and to promote a focus on effective practices for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).  The activities of the project will include providing training and education, technical assistance and information to school personnel and parents

Assistive Technology SWAT Team

Young children and students with autism often benefit from evaluation and intervention in augmentative/alternative communication, computer and environmental access, and visual/instructional technology to optimize their learning and development. WIHD is the premier resource in the Hudson Valley for AT resources and offers the following training to school districts:

The " Schools in Westchester Assistive Technology Teams" (SWAT) Team works with schools in the county to identify their unique needs related to assistive technology (AT) use in their schools, and train teams of school personnel to be able to take care of AT needs on a low- and medium-tech level.  The SWAT Team also supports the ongoing implementation of AT in schools through the school-aged loan library and continued technical assistance as needed.

Applied Behavioral Analysis and Challenging Behaviors

Behavior management and challenging behaviors can be one of the most significant barriers to learning, developmental progress, and inclusion in the community for children with autism. At WIHD we have experts to address these difficulties.

The purpose of the Applied Behavior Analysis Program is to provide a highly specialized service focused on providing behavioral therapy to individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities who display challenging behaviors using an applied behavior analysis (ABA) approach. In addition, the program will provide informational and technical training workshops for parents & educators in the region to advance knowledge in the area of applied behavioral analysis for individuals with autism & developmental disabilities.

Customized Training and Consultation to Schools

WIHD can establish contracts with school districts who are seeking training for children with autism spectrum disorder in their classrooms. Training can focus on individual children as well as entire classrooms, and can be from a variety of disciplines, including psychology, speech language pathology, and occupational therapy.
