Autism Program at WIHD

Strengthening the Community through training, support, and services for children, families, and professionals

Providing Clinical Services

Early Childhood Evaluation

Parents, caregivers, service providers, and administrators are often seeking high-quality evaluation services for young children who are suspected to be on the autism spectrum. This program is under development.

Through the Department of Health Early Intervention Program, we provide expert supplemental psychological evaluations for children aged birth through three years receiving early intervention services. Through contracts with local school districts and their Committee on Preschool Special Education families receive psychological and speech-language evaluations that help plan for transition from the early intervention program to the school district program.

Our Early Childhood Evaluation Service, which can be accessed directly by parents, provides an array of services that are individually tailored to the needs of the child and family, including home-based evaluations, extended diagnostic evaluations, nursery school observations, early intervention plan review, and consultation to teams and schools.

Assistive Technology Program

Young children and students with autism often benefit from evaluation and intervention in augmentative/alternative communication, computer and environmental access, and visual/instructional technology to optimize their learning and development.

WIHD is the premier resource in the Hudson Valley for AT resources and offers the following services:

The Lower Hudson Valley Regional Technology Center helps to ensure that children and adults with disabilities in Westchester and Rockland Counties have access to assistive technology to be more independent and participate more fully in the community. WIHD’s Technology Loan Program for Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers is a lending library of assistive technology for families of children receiving early intervention in Westchester and Rockland counties. The Assistive Technology Team at WIHD evaluates children and adults for technology supports and also gives training in assistive technology intervention.

Applied Behavior Analysis/ Challenging Behaviors Program

Management of challenging behaviors can be one of the most significant barriers to learning, developmental progress, and inclusion in the community for children with autism. At WIHD we have experts to address these difficulties.

The Applied Behavior Analysis program provides services for individuals with challenging behaviors who will benefit from consistent program of intervention with focused behavioral outcomes.
