Regional Center for Autism - Hudson Valley
The Hudson Valley Regional Center for Autism (RCA), is one of seven newly established Regional Autism Centers in New York State, coordinated by the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) at SUNY at Albany.
The Center is a collaboration between WIHD and New York Medical College and serves the seven county Lower Hudson Valley Region
- Westchester
- Rockland
- Putnam
- Orange
- Sullivan
- Dutchess and
- Ulster.
The six other Regional Centers are based in Binghamton, Rochester, Albany, Buffalo, Manhattan and Queens, NY.
The goals of the RCA are to serve as a resource in bringing research and practice together in community settings, and to promote a focus on effective practices for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The activities of the project will include providing training and education, technical assistance and information to school personnel and parents on
- a) evidence-based methods to promote effective educational practices and improve outcomes for children with autism spectrum disorders, ages 4-21; and
- b) evidence-based interventions designed to target the core deficits of autism spectrum disorders, including impairments in social interactions and communication, and restricted repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior.
The project is designed to:
- improve the quality of services to children with ASD;
- improve the educational outcomes for children with ASD;
- increase the likelihood that children with ASD will be educated in regular classrooms with the non-disabled peers, to the maximum extent appropriate; and
- improve the quality of life for children affected by ASD and their families.
The project is in the initial start-up phase and training activities are being scheduled for March and April 2008.
